IT products and services provider Fujitsu has revealed a prototype for the “New Generation Cane,” which has GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 3G connectivity integrated into its structure. With a LCD display built into the handle, the cane would help guide the user during the walk.

The prototype works together with a computer software that allows the user to plan a route in advance. The software then sends directions to the cane, which indicates the way with large green arrows on the screen, and vibrates to alert the user to make a turn.

The cane also collects heart rate information using a thumbpad located on the handle; it can track how many times it is tapped on the ground; and measure temperature and humidity. The data can be shared wirelessly with anyone, such as a family member in case the user gets lost or needs help.

While the device is just a concept, Fujitsu said it is receiving positive feedback at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which ends Feb. 28, so it might consider launching it to the market in the near future.
