Researchers in Spain have developed a new system capable of increasing conventional GPS devices’ accuracy. The team claims its findings can increase accuracy by as much as 90 percent and that the system would work for cars and smartphones.

The team of researchers from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M) claims their systems is able to improve GPS precision by as much as 90 percent, combining readings from a number of different sensors to reduce the margin of error, regardless of location, population, building density or even interference from tunnels.

Tests have been successful at the UC3M’s intelligent car and researchers are now planning to develop the system to work with smartphones’ built-in sensors, with little cost to the manufacturers.
