The results will be used to create accurate emissions maps for city councils and local authorities to be able to publish emissions reports required by European legislation, and assess the effectiveness of their emission reduction policies. Until now, cities and local authorities have had access only to statistical assessments of GHG concentrations.
 

    The first measurements will be taken in Paris over a three-year period in which Astrium Services and its project partners will collect data from a network of sensors on the ground and aerial campaigns. The measurements will then be assimilated with an atmospheric model to create detailed emissions maps with a resolution of approximately one kilometer. 
 

    Astrium’s first citywide GHG measurement demonstrator was tested in London during the 2012 summer. The company was successful in creating emission maps using data from satellites, aerial measurements, and four ground sensors positioned around the city. 
 

    The company has operational mission experience in the field of environmental and climate satellites as an important contractor for Envisat, Europe’s environmental satellite, as well as for Cryosat-2 (ice mass detection), Aeolus (measure wind profiles on a global scale) and EarthCARE (Earth Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation Explorer). Astrium was also involved in the design of the SMOS mission (moisture and salinity observation) and has designed and produced the Metop A, B and C meteorological satellites.
