Roscosmos: Yamal-402 Turbopump Bearing Failure Caused Early Separation
[Satellite TODAY 12-27-12] The initial failure of the Yamal-402 telecommunications satellite to reach its intended orbit was most likely caused by a failure of a bearing in a pump, Russia’s Roscosmos space agency reported Dec. 27.
Yamal-402 was launched Dec. 8 from the Baikonur Space Center in Kazakhstan and separated from its launch rocket 4 minutes early, failing to reach the desired orbit. Thales Alenia Space, which built the satellite for Russia’s Gazprom Space Systems, later lifted the satellite into its intended orbit using its onboard engines.
According to Roscosmos space agency experts, the destruction of a bearing inside the turbopump of the Briz-M launch rocket’s upper stage resulted in the early separation. However, the service life of the satellite will now be reduced from 15 to 11 years, due to emergency use of some of its fuel reserves.
