Canada’s Supreme Court ruling is a major victory for cable and satellite companies.

Canada’s Supreme Court has overturned a Federal Court of Appeal decision, which favored the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission’s (CRTC) request to establish a value-for-signal system.

Broadcasters justified the move as necessary to finance local programming but satellite and cable providers argued it would lead to higher costs for consumers.

The court ruled, in a 5-4 vote, that the CRTC does not have the authority to establish such system, which would have made cable and satellite providers pay broadcasters for carrying their signals.
