Boeing selected Saft to provide Li-ion battery packs for four new 702SP communication satellites. The “small platform” satellites are designed to operate in the 3- to 8-kilowatt power range for Asia Broadcast Satellite (ABS) and Satéllites Mexicanos (Satmex). This is Boeing’s first order for its 702SP satellite program.

Saft will deliver high-energy lithium-ion cells and modules, which supply 8kW of on-board power for the 15 years the satellites are expected to be in operation. The batteries are lightweight, which contributes to Boeing’s goal for the program.

The first two satellites, ABS-3A and Satmex 7, are expected to be ready in 2015 for launch aboard SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
