[Satellite TODAY 12-04-12] Iridium Communications has selected technology design and development firm Cambridge Consultants to participate in the deployment of its second-generation satellite constellation and commercial space program Iridium NEXT, scheduled for an early 2015 launch, the companies announced.

Cambridge Consultants will lead subscriber equipment technology development for the constellation, aiming to cover the entire globe, and provide input into the broader satellite and Iridium NEXT’s ground infrastructure system design. The Iridium NEXT technology roadmap is designed to provide Iridium customers with a new generation of feature enhancements, global wireless connectivity and other product benefits.
“Our input to the Iridium NEXT program will help the company scale its business by maximizing its return on investment in this next-generation satellite network,” Cambridge Consultants Wireless Division Head Richard Traherne said in a statement. “By applying knowledge acquired through our years of work with Iridium, we will ensure not only that the ground terminals and infrastructure for Iridium NEXT are effective, but that performance and user experience take a significant step forward and that flexibility is built in to enable exciting new features for future users.”
