As Internet connections in Syria were shut down, Syrians are recurring to satellites to communicate.

Internet connections were shut down in Syria on Thursday and remained down through Friday. The blackout is reported to be more thorough than similar others in countries throughout the region.

Some telephone landlines are still working but reports suggest that most communications from Syria to the rest of the world are coming out through satellite telephone and Internet connections. However, the elevated cost of satellite communications puts a limit to the amount of information that can be transmitted to and from the revolted country.
