NOAA’s new GOES-R Series Program, four satellites meant to replace and upgrade the existing fleet of GEO satellites, underwent a successful Mission Critical Design Review executed by an external group of experts. Now, the Agency is starting to prepare for launch scheduled for late 2015.

The new GOES series is expected to improve short-term weather forecasts and long-term climatological trends by offering faster and clearer images. The satellite will also continue to monitor lightning activity, the atmosphere, oceans, land and the sun.

The GOES-R Series Program also includes a new data processing ground system, new antenna systems, and a remote back up facility. The program will have funding available to support its operation until 2038.
