LightSquared’s latest proposal to the FCC trying to save its MSS L-band spectrum holdings and create an LTE network is under public scrutiny. According to the FCC, petitions to deny the company’s proposal are due on Dec. 17, oppositions on Jan. 5 and reply comments on Jan. 11.
Earlier this fall, LightSquared proposed to share the spectrum used by the federal government for weather ballons while permanently surrendering its controversial 10 MHz of spectrum adjacent to the one used by GPS receivers. If approved, the company would share the NOAA spectrum rather than gain exclusive rights to it, giving it access to 10 MHz for downlink LTE traffic. Combining what it already owns, in total, LightSquared would have 30 MHz of spectrum, 10 MHz less than it originally intended for the LTE network.
