South African provider of vendor-neutral data centers, Teraco Data Environments, has announced Africa’s first vendor-neutral satellite earth station to be completed by March 2013. The station will connect satellite and terrestrial telecommunications networks and is expected to benefit satellite and Internet service providers, as well as African carriers.

Using both existing and new Teraco infrastructure, the Teleport will connect directly with the data center via fiber. This will provide its clients the opportunity to deploy their receivers at the Isando Data Center site enabling direct access to more than 50 telecommunications companies. The station is expected to ultimately make satellite connectivity more affordable for the region.
