Thales Alenia Space Vice President Michel Ricard and Turkmenistan President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow met Wednesday to discuss the progress of the project that will place the first Turkmen satellite in orbit by 2014. In honor of the contract, Thales started construction of the satellite last year. China will handle the launch from the Xichang space center using a Changzheng-3B rocket type.

With this satellite, Turkmenistan hopes to make a significant breakthrough in telecommunications, Internet and mobile communications in the country and the region. Additionally, it’s expected to open the doors to environmental and agricultural monitoring from space, and research for the oil and gas industry.

During the meeting Ricard and President Gurbanguli Berdimuhamedow also discussed the possibility of a future partnership and cooperation in the civil aviation field.
