The recently resuscitated GOES-13 satellite, managed by NOAA and the NASA GOES project at the Goddard Space Flight Center, has created an animation of Hurricane Sandy’s life from beginning to dissipation.

The animation starts Oct. 23 with Sandy’s transformation from Tropical Depression to Hurricane from the Caribbean into the mid-Atlantic where cold front and high-pressure air masses blocked it from moving north or east. This caused Sandy to amplify and head toward the shore.

Sandy then converted into the record-breaking storm that flooded New Jersey and New York, and brought blizzards to the West Virginia Mountains causing chaos and an estimated total damage of $20 billion.

By 5:00 am. EDT, Oct. 31, NOAA’s National Hydrometeorological Prediction Center (NOAA/HPC) issued an advisory of Sandy’s weakening, but still maintaining alert in some areas as the storm winded down.
