[Satellite TODAY Insider 10-31-12] United Kingdom-based manufacturer Cobham has combined all of the company’s satellite communications businesses into one organization following its successful acquisition and integration of Danish satellite communications company Thrane & Thrane earlier this year, Cobham announced Oct. 31.

The new, established strategic business unit will be named Cobham Satcom. Thrane & Thrane will trade as Cobham Satcom starting in November, and will form the core of the new business unit from its headquarters in Denmark.
With the new development, Thrane & Thrane will be immediately rebranded. Cobham said it expects to complete this process by the end of 2013. Some of Cobham’s satcom product lines, however, will be adopting Thrane & Thrane’s product names. Cobham Cape Town’s airborne products will be renamed to match Thrane’s Aviator brand. Cobham Orlando’s land-mobile products will be renamed Explorer. Cobham added that it intends to continue using Thrane’s Sailor and Sea Tel maritime product names for select products.
Satcom SBU also will adopt the Cobham Satcom name and Cobham’s brand on its products throughout 2013.
Thrane & Thrane CEO Walther Thygesen will lead the Cobham Satcom division with assistance from a multinational management team. The new business unit will also include operations from Cobham’s satcom facilities in Cape Town, South Africa, Concord, Calif., and Orlando, Fla.
Satcom SBU and Cobham Aerospace and Security Division President Richard Tyson said that the new Cobham Satcom business unit is now twice the size of what either Thrane & Thrane or Cobham’s legacy satcom businesses were prior to the combination.
“Cobham Satcom has a great future,” Tyson said in a statement. “The integration of the businesses is going well, with teams focused on how best to bring together complementary product lines and routes to market so that we can grow the business further. As the demand for airborne, land-mobile and maritime satellite communications continues to increase, we’re working hard to make it easier for customers to buy from us a wider range of satcom equipment and integrated solutions.”
