A review of CTIA’s semi-annual wireless industry survey by Tim Farrar, from TMF Associates, sheds some light on the reality of the wireless industry and the spectrum demand.

Farrar contradicts the survey’s conclusion by saying that in reality, there has been a “dramatic slowdown” in wireless traffic growth in 2012, from 54 percent total growth in 2011 to only 21 percent in the first half of the current year. The numbers don’t only show a decline on traffic but also a significant decline in average wireless data traffic per cellphone-network connected device. He implies that this means device owners have plateaued in their consumption of data.

Farrar doesn’t reach a solid conclusion but suggests a change of behavior in consumers due to wireless providers’ adoption of data limits in their services could be the reason for this slowdown.
