Latin America as a region has probably frustrated and intrigued the satellite sector in equal measure through the years. With economic instability rife in the early part of the previous decade, it always seemed to be one of those regions where satellite would never quite make good on its potential. Fast forward to 2011, and Latin America represents an almost ‘perfect storm’ of opportunity for satellite players with everything falling into place at the right time.

Late last year, the Mexican Government signed a $1 billion contract with Boeing to build the state-of-the-art satellite system. Countries such as Venezuela and Bolivia are also developing a space-based capability and spending significant dollars building new satellites.
This economic growth is leading to more demands for pay-TV as new middle classes emerge in countries like Brazil and Mexico. For the satellite industry, it is a potentially strong lucrative growth market in terms of pay-TV, government and broadband. However, due to cultural differences, Latin America can sometimes be a difficult market to assess. Via Satellite is delighted to bring to you a special webinar event with an interesting blend of speakers who can bring unique insights into the satellite market in the region.
The first speaker is Pablo Yañez, Senior Vice President, Data Products, Global Crossing. Global Crossing is a major telco that uses satellite to supplement its global fiber network. The company recently participated in a new capacity deal with SES World Skies. Yañez will bring unique insights into the demands a telecoms operator and a major buyer of satellite capacity has in this market.
The second speaker is Eugenio Gamboa, Planning and Technological Development Director, Pegaso Banda Ancha, a company that is deeply involved in the Mexican satellite market, a huge area of opportunity for satellite players. Gamboa will bring insights into the Mexican government’s innovative E-Mexico program, which Pegaso has a strong involvement in. Gamboa will also talk about how the satellite landscape in Mexico is changing as a result of the rollout of a number of electronic and digital services based on satellite.
