January 11, 2007 – China conducted an anti-satellite missile test. The target of the test – a Chinese weather satellite – was destroyed, leaving an estimated 40,000 fragments from 1 to 10 centimeters in size orbiting the Eaerth. This was the largest space debris incident in history and one of the most significant due to the low-altitude orbit of the debris. In June 2007, NASA’s Terra environmental spacecraft was the first to be moved in order to prevent impacts from this debris incident
