House Bill Could End Ohio’s Satellite TV Sales Tax
[Satellite Today 07-03-07] A bill introduced in the Ohio House of Representatives would end the state’s satellite TV tax.
House Bill 599, the "Ohio Video Tax Fairness Act," would drop the satellite TV sales tax initiated in 2003 for Ohio’s estimated 980,000 satellite TV customers. Sales taxes collected from the state’s satellite subscribers total about $100 million, with customers paying about $43 in taxes per year.
In a statement, the Ohio Cable Telecommunications Association said it was surprised by the proposal and that the legislature “just went through a painful process to pare the state budget to get it balanced again. This bill would irresponsibly reopen that deficit. The responsible thing to do would be to wait on the courts to rule on this issue before blowing a hole in the state budget."
