DigitalGlobe, a provider of high-resolution commercial satellite imagery and geospatial information, has opened a commercial business unit in Boston, the company announced March 12.

The new office occasions the integration of assets from DigitalGlobe’s acquisition of GlobeXplorer and provides easier access to the company’s digital imagery products for non-government technology sectors, including real estate, Internet portals and location-based services.

“The role of geospatial content is expanding beyond traditional [geographic information systems] and remote sensing users,” Jill Smith, CEO of DigitalGlobe, said in a statement. “We eventually see our commercial business comprising about 50 percent of our total business…. This new office is also part of our transition from a satellite-centric imagery company to a leading provider of geospatial content.”
