A Delta 2 rocket, built by The Boeing Co. [BA] blasted off space launch complex 17A at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., July 16, carrying a Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite into orbit.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems [LMT] built the GPS 2R-5 bird launched at 5:17 a.m. EDT. It joins 27 other operational GPS satellites now on orbit.

Launch officials said it was a “smooth flight” and U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Tony Cherney added, “We had no problems with boater; I think the public is getting the message.”

Last May, a fishing tournament off the coast of Cape Canaveral grounded a rocket launch, bottlenecking commercial launches. Since then, the Air Force has worked hard to inform the public about upcoming launches.

For the most part, the Cap launch facilities will remain quiet until late August, when Boeing will attempt to send its advanced Delta 3 rocket into low-Earth orbit with a demonstration payload onboard.
