Boeing Delta 2 Launches Latest GPS Satellite
A Boeing Co. [BA] Delta 2 launcher has replaced one of the first U.S Global Positioning System satellites, which was launched aboard another Delta rocket 11 years ago. The launch occured at 9:48 p.m. May 11 at Cape Canaveral.
It was the 31st GPS launch aboard a Delta, and Boeing said it has 17 more launches manifested for Delta 2 vehicles.
Boeing said it is working on the design, development and production of the fourth generation of GPS satellites, known as Block 2F, for the Air Force. Beginning in 2002, a number of these satellites will be launched on Delta 4 rockets under the Air Force’s Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Program.
