American Mobile Changes Name, Focus
With all indicators that the Internet will be playing a more prominent role in the future of the satellite industry, American Mobile Satellite Corp. [SKYC] announced that, effective April 24, the company has changed its name to Motient Corp. and will change its stock ticker to [MTNT], effective April 25, to reflect its refocus on delivering information to mobile users.
“We have clearly moved beyond our initial role as a satellite service provider,” said Gary Parsons, Motient chairman. “The new name and branding is more consistent with our role as a mobile Internet provider with a comprehensive terrestrial and satellite data communications network.”
“Motient conveys a sense of motion, intelligence and information – all critically important factors in how we provide wireless communications solutions,” said Walter Purnell, president and CEO of Motient. “Our corporate direction is providing wireless data solutions and mobile Internet access using the best terrestrial network in the United States. Motient’s satellite and industry-leading terrestrial network provide on-street and in-building coverage to more than 220 million Americans; it is clearly our competitive edge.”
In addition to its mobile satellite services, Motient operates the Ardis terrestrial wireless network nationwide.
