Germany’s media authorities have urged Kirch Group to issue conditional access modules (CAMs) for its Betacrypt encryption system, used by Premiere World. According to the authorities, the goal of consumers being able to choose amongst different platform operators still is to be achieved. The d-box can only carry interactive applications that were programmed for its specific operating system. The regulators in particular criticised the fact that a consumer who buys a non-d-box decoder can’t receive Premiere World. Gerrit Huy, chairwoman of Kirch’s subsidiary Beta Research, made it clear that this is unlikely to change in the near future. She said Premiere World has strong objections to CAMs, which could adversely affect features such as the multi-camera angle feature during Formula 1.
