Spain’s leading digital pay-TV platform, Canal Satelite Digital (CSD), says it plans to reach one million subscribers and launch 20 new digital channels this year. Currently, the venture has 865,000 subscribers after ending last year with more than 813,000 subscribers. Over the last year, the company gained more than 210,000 new subscribers, a 35 per cent increase on 1998. Despite its buoyant subscriber results, the platform lost Ptas6,872 million (Euro 41.3 million) in 1999. The objective now, according to Santiago Tapia, managing director of Canal Satelite, is to reduce its losses by one-third this year. The CSD losses helped push the Sogecable group as a whole into a loss of Ptas2,321 million. The platform is now focusing on interactive, with a current offering including interactive advertising, games and sports services, Liga ACB + Interactiva (interactive Basketball League channel), and nine home banking services.
