Munich-based movie rights trading company Kinowelt Median AG intends to become a shareholder in TM3. According to industry sources, talks have been held between Kinowelt’s board and Herbert Kloiber, whose Tele Munchen Group holds one third of the Munich-based channel’s shares. In January Kinowelt had announced plans to create its own television channel. However, the latest move shows that the company has now opted to take over an existing service instead, in the case of TM3 a channel which is available to almost all German cable and DTH homes. Kloiber currently is seeking a new investor for TM3 after Rupert Murdoch decided to abandon Germany’s free-to-air market and instead concentrate on pay-TV. Murdoch has already sold his 49.9 per cent stake in commercial television channel Vox to CLT-UFA and wants to dispose of his 66 per cent share in TM3 as well. Apart from Kinowelt, Luxembourg-based media company SBS Broadcasting is thought to be interested in Murdoch’s TM3 stake.
