MURDOCH PONDERS SATELLITE SPINOFF
Rupert Murdoch is considering a spin-off of the global satellite operations of his News Corp. Ltd. [NWS] empire. The media mogul is in the process of reorganizing the News Corp. family. Part of that reorganization might involve consolidating its global satellite operations into one entity, company officials confirmed.
Murdoch is known to be concerned that News Corp. is vulnerable to a takeover and making moves to reorganize the company could be the best way of maximize its value. As a result, News Corp.’s 40 percent stake in British Sky Broadcasting Group plc [BSY], Asia’s Star TV and small stakes in Australia’s Foxtel, Sky Latin America and Japan Sky Broadcasting could soon become part of one multi-billion-dollar global satellite group.
Speculation is rife that Murdoch may seek a strategic partnership with a cable company or a telecommunications player to strengthen the satellite group, if the spinoff goes ahead.
