At our deadline, no space-industry companies had reported any major (or even minor) Y2K problems, which clearly was a relief for the hundreds of thousands of people working worldwide in the industry. Space experts are cautioning that the year still is young, and problems could occur. But for the moment, the world of space is a glitch-free zone.

Several companies and organizations, including Intelsat, had taken costly and lengthy precautions to make sure the Y2K bug did not hit the industry. For its part, Intelsat executives said they went to "extraordinary lengths" in their Y2K planning. The company clearly took a "leadership role" in the Y2K effort, analysts added.

So, for now, it’s a very happy Y2K year for the space industry.
