BSKYB MOVES THE BALL AROUND
BSkyB moved quickly to settle a potentially damaging row over its proposed coverage of this year’s Ryder Cup golf tournament last week. The pay-TV operator had intended to put its coverage of the tournament on its pay per view service Sky Box Office, but as a free to air service to subscribers. This would have meant that the service would not be available to subscribers of ONdigital. Relations between the satellite and digital terrestrial operators have increasingly been marked by acrimony over the last few months, with disputes over ONdigital’s exclusive carriage of the UEFA Champions League and BSkyB’s perceived foot-dragging on making available its Sky Sports 2 channel. However, BSkyB’s plans received a setback when the tournament’s organisers, The European Tour and Ryder Cup Ltd issued legal proceedings against the operator, demanding the competition be restored to Sky Sports. A Ryder Cup spokesman was quoted as saying that his organisation did "not believe the Ryder Cup should be used as a pawn" in the dispute between BSkyB and ONdigital. BSkyB has now said it will show three hours a day on Sky Sports 2.
