Apparently the mechanics of Koreasat-3 and the Indonesian Telkom craft are almost identical. The lift off finally took place on 4 September

A The BBC coverage from the World Athletics in Seville were fed over 4188 MHz RHCP in clear Pal. Presumably the use of this Indian Ocean satellite was for the provision of programme to the Far East for onward transmission.

D The Turkish channels Mesaj TV (11070 MHz vertical) and Mesaj TV International (11065 MHz vertical) have changed name to Meltem TV. At least for some of the time they are referred to as Meltem though at other times Mesaj is still used. Kanal 4 has appeared on 11090 MHz horizontal in clear MPEG-2, SR 3762, FEC 3/4, VPID 308, APID 256.

D The switch from analogue to digital compression has come suddenly in Russia as several channels change over in rapid succession, much in the same way as the Indian Doordarshan channels made the move. REN TV has launched via a new multiplex containing four time-shifted streams on 3923 MHz RHCP, SR 20254, FEC 3/4. The standard version (Moscow time) is on PIDs, V 201, A 401, +2 hours-V 202, A 402, +4 hours-V 203, A 403 and +7 hours-V 204, A 404. During parts of the day the channel still occupies this frequency in clear Pal. RENis output is made up of programming drawn from a number of Russian independent and regional TV channels. Kultura has launched on 3658 MHz RHCP in free-to-air MPEG-2, SR 4026, FEC 2/3, VPID 33, APID 34. As the name suggests, the channel is dedicated to all matters cultural in Russia.

D 11095 MHz horizontal seems to be frequently relaying the live output from the ITN studios in Grays Inn Road, London. For instance, on 28 August at 1235 preparations and rehearsals for the ITV Weekend News were fed over this stream for some time prior the live news bulletin. On several other occasions since then similar feed traffic has been observed. The parameters are: SR 5630, FEC 3/4, VPID 33, APID 34. The EPG entry is "SISLINK/ITN, 8MHz SDI".

D Following the recent launch of the two new Asian channels, Sony Entertainment Television and B4U, there are apparently several more channels in the same genre waiting in the wings. Zee TV will be making the move to digital compression via Astra-2A in October, Zee News and Zee Music are expected to launch soon, a new Bangladeshi-language offering is due later this month, Pakistan TV is also expected to launch in September and a channel named simply ë Asiai is likely to be with us some time next year. The new alliance between Playboy TV and The Adult Channel has started regular programming on 12250 MHz vertical, Ch.974. The EPG entry is iP/A". The channel broadcasts nightly between 2000 and 0400 with a subscription cost of Pounds 7.99 per month. The Chinese language channel, CNE, at Ch.673 has appeared in the EPG now as "PCNE Chinese". Other recent changes in the EPG are as follows: QVC on Ch.650, TV Travel Shop-Ch.653, Shop!-Ch.656 and Sony Entertainment Television-Ch.673. S4C2 has finally entered the EPG at Ch.519. The channel is free-to-air to all those who hold a FTA card and have informed BSkyB at Livingston of their wish to receive it. Time shifted or delayed versions of Fox Kids and Nickelodeon have launched here. Fox Kids + can be found on Ch.611 in the EPG, 12266 MHz horizontal and Nickelodeon Replay is on Ch.605, 12304 MHz horizontal. Not surprisingly both channels are encoded in Videoguard. As expected, Nickelodeon Jr has replaced Nickelodeon at Ch.606, 11895 MHz vertical. The new channel airs daily from 0600-1900. On 1 September all of the Music Choice Europe audio channels left 11778 MHz vertical and reappeared at 12188 MHz horizontal. A new channel dedicated to home shopping for computer accessories and console games is set to join Sky Digital in November. The channel will be run by one of the most successful games internet sites, Gameplay.com.

D Studio Universal has launched here, in parallel with the new outlet on Astra at 19.2 degrees East, on 11466 MHz horizontal, VPID 1060, APID 1062 in MPEG-2/Irdeto. Presumably this relay is for German cable headend downlinking. Russiais NTV International has moved from 11645 MHz horizontal to 12727 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4. Two new offerings have joined the Deutsche Telekom package on 11647 MHz horizontal, SR 27500, FEC 3/4. They are Singles TV, a channel dedicated to anything remotely connected to being single, and Via 1, a travel channel. Both of these are encoded in Irdeto.

D The Spanish version of The Cartoon Network has launched on 11934 MHz vertical, encoded in Mediaguard. There are two audio streams active, APID 112 carries the Spanish audio track whilst APID 113 is the English (original) track. Cartoon Network Nederland has vacated 12168 MHz vertical and has been replaced by a Turner Classic Movies testcard from Spain. The German channel, TM3, has started test transmissions on 12610 MHz vertical in free-to-air MPEG-2, SR 22000, FEC 5/6 complete with their teletext service called tm3-TEXT. PolSat 2 is new on 11992 MHz horizontal, VPID 166, APID 104. The channel is encoded in Cryptoworks. A promo for the Polish Wizja Sport channel has started on 12384 MHz horizontal, VPID 162, APID 88 in free-to-air MPEG-2. Movie channel, Studio Universal has launched on 12090 MHz vertical, VPID 2303, APID 2304 in MPEG-2/Irdeto. 12610 MHz vertical is airing a Bloomberg TV EspaOa testcard in clear MPEG-2, VPID 45, APID 49. TVBS, the Hong Kong based channel for expatriates in the UK, was broadcasting in the clear during the morning of 2 September on 12168 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4. Later the channel returned to their normal encrypted mode. On 12670 MHz vertical, SR 22000, FEC 5/6, VPID 289, APID 290, a new French channel, Zap TV, has started a stream share with the motoring channel, Grand Tourisme. Zap is on the air daily from 1300 to 1800. Both channels are free-to-air.
A Nickelodeon Jr has launched in Videocrypt encoded Pal on 11671 MHz horizontal. The channel airs here for just four hours per day, 0600-1000. Cartoon Network and TNT (or TCM as it is about to become) are to be encrypted as from October 15 on 11022 MHz horizontal. Soft Videocrypt encoding will be used so only a decoder is required, not a smartcard, for open viewing.

D The main feed for RTL from the Belgian F1 Grand Prix on August 29 was at 12557 MHz horizontal, SR 11264, FEC 3/4 in clear MPEG-2. RTLis Pitcam feed could be found on 12544 MHz horizontal with the same parameters. As mentioned in Transponder Monitor August 11, a new EBU-backed TV channel for Kosovo is to be launched. The channel will be known as Nezavisna TV and it will be based in Pristina. The Italian home shopping channel, Elefante Telemarket, has become somewhat erratic on 10958 MHz horizontal. Some days the channel does not appear at all. BT has opened a new multiplex at 11302 MHz vertical, SR 29993, FEC 3/4. At present six streams are active as follows: Channel 1 (Tower Broadcast Centre animated caption)-VPID 512, APID 650; Channel 2 (Tower caption)-V 513, A 660; BTV1-V 2561, A 2562; BTV2-V 2564, A 2565; BTV3-V 2567, A 2568; BTV4(TWI Ch1)-V 2570, A 2571. On 30 August at 1155 a feed containing video footage of Russian troops on manoeuvres for the Russian channel NTV was sighted on 12516 MHz horizontal, SR 5632, FEC 3/4, VPID 33, APID 34 in free-to-air MPEG-2. The EPG entry was "Service 1".
A In the audio baseband behind the Egyptian Space Channel at 11474 MHz vertical the Egyptian second Cultural Programme, better known with its catchy title Al-Bernameg Al-Thany, has launched on the 7.56 MHz subcarrier. Over at 11516 MHz vertical, the home of Nile TV, Egyptis Holy Quiran Programme has replaced the Second Cultural Programme at 7.56 MHz.

D More on TLI, the new channel on 12476 MHz horizontal. The channelis full name in Television Locales Independantes and, as the name suggests, the output comprises of a mix of French local independent TV stations looking for a wider audience throughout Europe. Mizik Tropical from the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe has left 10719 MHz vertical. Italyis Digital Shopping Network (DSN) on 11881 MHz vertical has undergone a name change. It is now entitled AntePrima. The Hotbird Jazz Channel is stream sharing with the Gold & Watch Channel/Art Channel on 12539 MHz horizontal, VPIDs 4355/4437, APIDs 4437/4438. CNN International has launched on 12597 MHz vertical, VPID 168, APID 112 in free-to-air MPEG-2. Also CNN Radio is occupying an audio stream here on APID 113. Evision, the new Italian computer/IT channel which is currently testing on 12673 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 360, APID 361 is due to start regular programming on 30 September. The RAI channels on 11766 MHz vertical have undergone PID changes in the last few days. RAI Uno is now on V 160, A 80, RAI Due-V 161, A 84, RAI Tre-V 162, A 88 and the RAI testcard-V 164. Three new streams are active on 12341 MHz vertical within the Italian D+ multiplex. Canal D+ is on VPID 161, APID 84, Palco promo-V 164, A 96 and Vetrina D+ promo-V 165, A 100. All of these are encoded in Irdeto. Colour bars overlaid with "FACILITY LINE" were occupying a stream at 10722 MHz horizontal, SR 29895, FEC 3/4, VPID 1003, APID 1203 on 28 August at 1220. The EPG entry was "HB4/30U". On the same frequency via PIDs V 1001, A 1201, audio only from an English soccer match with commentary could be heard.
A On 11565 MHz horizontal Channel 7 Europe has launched a part time service in clear Pal with audio available via the 6.50 MHz, 7.02 MHz and 7.20 MHz subcarriers. This transponder was previously occupied by MBC. Best van Nederland (BVN) and the radio stations RNW 1 & 2 have left 11285 MHz vertical. Erotic channel Torrid TV has moved from 11010 MHz horizontal to 11285 MHz vertical where it broadcasts in D2MAC/Eurocrypt S.

D Relays of the Seville athletics for the Portuguese network RTP could be seen on 11003 MHz horizontal, SR 9999, FEC 3/4, VPID 4130, APID 4131 in free-to-air MPEG-2. The EPG identifier was "Channel 11".
A The familiar output from the Herbalife Network can be seen frequently on 11163 MHz horizontal in clear Pal. As usual, several different language soundtracks can be heard in the audio baseband. English is at 6.60 MHz, German 7.02 MHz, French 7.20 MHz, Spanish 7.38 MHz, Russian 7.74 MHz, Czech 7.92 MHz and Polish 8.10 MHz. Herbalife also uses C-Band capacity on PAS-4 at 68.5 degrees East.

D There is a new Turkish digital package on 11596 MHz horizontal, SR 30930, FEC 2/3 in free-to-air MPEG-2 containing Show TV (V 610, A 611), Prima or D Fun (V 620, A 621), ATV (V 630, A 631), Kanal 7 (V640, A 641) and Fashion TV (V 650, A 651). Hotbird Jazz Channel and Krisma are stream sharing on 11517 MHz horizontal in free-to-air MPEG-2, VPID 4353, APID 4354.
A 11174 MHz horizontal was used for intermittent feed traffic from the athletics in Seville until the end of August in clear Pal. The recipient is unknown but Italian commentary was available via the 6.60 MHz subcarrier.

D The TV 8 Danmark tests have ceased on 12630 MHz vertical. Occasional feed traffic now occupies this stream. Radio Limerick One TV appears to have temporarily left the Merlin Communications multiplex at 12111 MHz horizontal. Apparently the cause of its absence is "technical difficulties".
A Travel has moved from 12015 MHz RHCP to 12322 MHz vertical in D2MAC/Eurocrypt. Nickelodeon Scandinavia is now using 12015 MHz.

D Canal+ Bla (Blue) has started on 11278 MHz vertical, VPID 515, APID 680, MPEG-2/Conax in place of Hallmark Nordic. A stream share between the National Geographic Channel, ï tv and Sky News has launched for Scandinavia on 12303 MHz vertical, VPID 1603, APID 652 in MPEG-2/Conax. Eurosport has started on 12455 MHz vertical, SR 28000, FEC 3/4

D According to the Yugoslav government, a new TV channel is to be launched, probably later this month, via 11421 MHz horizontal, SR 3440, FEC 3/4. It will be entitled Televizija Jugoslavija and is expected to broadcast a mix of home grown programming both via satellite and terrestrially.

D Now that Channel 4 is covering some of the cricket matches in this country feed traffic from matches can often be found on 11491 MHz vertical, SR 27500, FEC 3/4 under the EPG banner "Channel 2" in free-to-air MPEG-2. On 30 August at 1200 a press conference given by the French hypermarket giant Carrefour was fed over 12585 MHz horizontal, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 122, APID 132 in clear MPEG-2 by APTN Paris.
A TV5 Europe has launched on 12648 MHz vertical in clear Pal with audio via the 5.80 MHz subcarrier.

D Abu Dhabi TV started on 11881 MHz horizontal, SR 27500, FEC 3/4, VPID 1001, APID 1201 in free-to-air MPEG-2 last week. However this was replaced by the Palestine Satellite Channel after a few days. Also the Abu Dhabi Sports Channel has been sighted here too at times. There is one other stream operating on this frequency on VPID 1002 which, so far, contains just a testcard.

D Coverage of the recent World Athletics Championships in Seville was carried on 11615 MHz vertical, SR 13844, FEC 7/8 in MPEG-2 4:2:2 for France 2 & 3 Sport. TVE, the host broadcaster, used 11585 MHz vertical, SR 10909, FEC 3/4, VPID 33, APID 34, also in 4:2:2 mode. Action from the Belgian F1 Grand Prix could be seen on 11538 MHz, SR 5632, FEC 3/4. This was the primary feedpoint from the host broadcaster Radio TElEvision Belge de la Communaute (RTBF). Five streams are active on 11532 MHz horizontal, SR 25693, FEC 5/6 relaying the US Open Tennis Championships. Unfortunately only one is free-to-air, one is in 4:2:2 mode and the other three are in PowerVu. Occasional corporate feeds by Daimler-Chrysler TV can be seen on 11685 MHz vertical, SR 6111, FEC 3/4 in clear MPEG-2. These feeds are second hop, sourced from the first hop on Kopernikus DFS2 at 28.5 degrees East. On 28 August at 1210 a German horse racing meeting was fed over 11461 MHz, SR 6109, FEC 3/4, VPID 33, APID 34 in clear MPEG-2 under the EPG name "Service 1". Another feed from what appeared to be a different German meeting was observed at the same time on 11470 MHz horizontal with identical parameters.

D ITV Sport used two streams here for its coverage of the Belgian Grand Prix on 29 August. 11573 MHz, SR 5632, FEC 3/4 carried the main feed under the EPG title "ITV Belgium 99" whilst 11581 MHz, SR 5632, FEC 3/4 provided the secondary feed named "ITV RSF Belgium 99". The Discovery Channel has started to use 11661 MHz vertical, VPID 1460, APID 1420. The channel was free-to-air for a few days but has now encoded. The EPG title is "Telenor".

D On 28 August at 1155 a scrolling caption was noted on 10956 MHz vertical, SR 5630, FEC 3/4, VPID 308, APID 256 which read "BT TES 36 +44 403 106242. UKI 408 SNG UNIT. SKY SPORTS NEWS". The EPG entry was iBT TES-36. 2 Audio". On the same day a second hop feed of a rugby game between Australia and New Zealand in the Bledisloe Cup was relayed on 10972 MHz vertical, SR 5630, FEC 3/4, VPID 308, APID 256 in free-to-air MPEG-2. The host broadcaster was Channel 7 Australia. EPG ID was "LTP DSNG3".
