[Via Satellite 05-29-2014] SES will partner with the government of Luxembourg and five Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to develop SATMED, an electronic health platform designed by SES TechCom and supported by the Luxembourg government and the Minister for Cooperation and Humanitarian Action. The NGOs include three from Luxembourg — Friendship Luxembourg, Médecins Sans Frontières and Fondation Follereau — and two German NGOs — Archemed and German Doctors.

SATMED will assist in public health in emerging and developing countries, mostly in regions with poor connectivity. It will provide communication between doctors and tools for medical e-learning and e-teaching. There will be an IT cloud infrastructure available in facilities around the world to assist in data exchange and the setup of a medical infrastructure. emergency.lu, an international satellite emergency response system in Luxembourg, will implement the platform.

“With SATMED, we leverage our connectivity knowledge and our satellites’ capacity to connect even the remotest areas, enabling a real time exchange between medical teams and participants of governmental, institutional, scientific and humanitarian projects worldwide,” said Gerhard Bethscheider, managing director of SES TechCom. “SATMED is an open, flexible and affordable solution that perfectly fits our range of satellite based e-activities — emergency, e-health, e-learning and election.”
