[Via Satellite 06-02-2014] Thuraya Telecommunications launched the Atlas IP, a new broadband satellite terminal targeted for the maritime sector. This is the second maritime product launched by Thuraya in 2014 and will complement the Thuraya Orion IP broadband terminal launched in January. The Atlas IP will feature voice and data services with additional functionality built in.
The Atlas IP, designed by Singaporean manufacturer Addvalue, is capable of standard Internet Protocol (IP) data transfer rates up to 444 kbps and asymmetric streaming capability of 16 kbps to 384 kbps. Other components of the Atlas IP include a built-in firewall, Wi-Fi and fleet tracking based on distance or time with accurate geo-fencing. The product also offers port forwarding to enhance operational efficiency.
“As our second maritime terminal launch of 2014, Atlas IP represents an option for users who want an added value terminal that can act as a shipboard hub,” said Randy Roberts, VP of innovation at Thuraya. “Together with some of the most competitively-priced airtime packages available, it represents a serious challenge to the established order in maritime.”
