Satcom Direct and Gilat Satellite Networks have signed a strategic agreement to develop and supply new aviation antennas for OneWeb’s constellation, the companies announced Tuesday.
Gilat will develop an electronically steered antenna (ESA) system, and Satcom Direct subsidiary Satcom Direct Avionics will work with OneWeb to develop the modem unit. The companies are targeting a 2025 availability date. The antenna will be in the Satcom Direct Plane Simple antenna series portfolio.
Satcom Direct said the ESA terminal will provide global coverage for aviation customers in business, government, and defense, and customer requirements to lower aircraft drag, weight and fuel burn.
Gilat CEO Adi Sfadia said it is a milestone for the company to expand its IFC leadership.
“Together, we will create a next-generation ESA to support the dynamic connectivity demands of the global business aviation sector with a best-in-class antenna. The agreement gives us the opportunity to expand our proven technology know-how in commercial aviation and to showcase our expertise alongside Satcom Direct,” Sfadia commented.
