[Satellite TODAY 03-28-12] European airline TAP Portugal will offer in-flight connectivity on A330 flights between Europe and both North and South America when it launches OnAir’s inflight Wi-Fi service in early 2012, TAP announced March 27.

   Passengers flying on TAP’s Airbus A330 transatlantic routes will be will be able to use Internet OnAir using Wi-Fi personal electronic devices such as iPhones, iPads, BlackBerrys and laptops. TAP said the service would soon be extended to A350 flights. OnAir utilizes Inmarsat’s SwiftBroadband service and maintains an extensive network of international regulatory approvals and roaming agreements.
   Separately, OnAir announced that Wi-Fi connectivity is now available across all 21 of Emirates Airlines’ A380 fleet. OnAir added that combined GSM mobile phone and Wi-Fi service would be available on A380s in July. Internet OnAir was run as a test trial on more than 5,000 Emirates A380 flights before the formal service launched at the end of 2011.
   “We have taken two key lessons from the Internet OnAir service on Emirates’ A380s so far,” OnAir CEO Ian Dawkins said in a statement. “The first is that in-flight connectivity is here to stay. The second is that we can meet passengers’ requirements, even on the largest aircraft, with our SwiftBroadband service.”
