A passenger onboard a recent bmi flight from Chicago to Manchester, England, became the first commercial airline passenger to have an electrocardiogram in flight with data from the procedure transmitted via satellite to physicians on the ground.
Stephen Clarke was traveling on bmi when he experienced chest pains. Receiving the images via satellite, physicians in Phoenix were able to make an immediate diagnosis of a heart attack. Under their supervision, bmi flight attendants administered emergency treatment from the doctor’s kit on board. After a short stay at Wythenshawe Hospital in the United Kingdom, Clarke was discharged.
