The second batch of SES O3b mPOWER satellites are on the way to Cape Canaveral, after manufacturer Boeing announced on Wednesday that it shipped the satellites.
These are the third and fourth satellites for SES’s Medium-Earth Orbit (MEO) constellation — the first two satellites launched in December. Boeing is contracted to deliver 11 total O3b mPOWER satellites, but just 6 satellites are needed to provide global connectivity services.
The O3b mPOWER satellites are built on the all-digital 702X platform. Seven more satellites are currently in production.
“We are proud to have successfully delivered the third and fourth O3b mPOWER satellites and are looking forward to delivering the remaining satellites in the constellation,” said Michelle Parker, vice president of Space Mission Systems at Boeing Defense, Space & Security.
SES CTO Ruy Pinto said the first two satellites are going through rigorous testing as they arrive at their target orbit. O3b mPOWER is designed to deliver multiple gigabits per second of throughput and serve governments, cruise, and mobile network operators.
