Planet Labs released first light images from its Pelican-2 satellite of the Port of Laem Chabang in Eastern Thailand on Friday.

The Pelican-2 images were captured on March 12, after being launched on SpaceX’s Transporter-12 rideshare mission on Jan. 14.

Pelican-2 is part of Planet’s next-generation fleet, joining Pelican-1 to expand SkySat capabilities. The satellite provides imagery using 6 multispectral bands optimized for cross-sensor analysis with PlanetScope. It supports 50 cm tasked imagery and is designed to produce 40 cm class imagery.

Planet has equipped Pelican-2 with Nvidia’s Jetson platform for on-orbit computing, aiming to reduce the time between data capture and delivery to customers. The company said it expects to provide imagery with increased resolution after lowering the spacecraft to its operational altitude and completing commissioning and calibration work. Planet plans to launch additional Pelicans later this year.

“The spacecraft is exceeding expectations and is rising to meet the market needs of our customers,” said Will Marshall, cofounder and CEO of Planet. “Our Pelican fleet offers greater capacity, higher resolution, lower latency, and, with Nvidia’s most powerful chip onboard, Pelican will be able to do AI processing at the edge.”
