The U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command awarded BAE Systems a contract to build radio frequency (RF) terminals for a space-based data layer.

BAE Systems announced the award on Oct. 15 and said the system will feature military-grade security and support operations from Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) to Geosynchronous Orbit (GEO), but did not specify the program.

The company plans to supply a solution based on its family of software-defined radios. The radios are designed to deal with jamming, electromagnetic interference, and space radiation. BAE plans to use an Application Programming Interface (API) to enable precise pointing between payloads.

“This contract leverages decades of experience delivering mission-critical, radiation-hardened hardware and communications systems – from Apollo-era programs to today’s deep-space and airborne missions,” said Joe Dziezynski, BAE Systems Space Systems product line director. “Our resilient design and established manufacturing capacity will enable rapid deployment and scalable production.”
