In the search for clues about the deadly Yarnell Hill wildfire in Arizona, the University of Wisconsin’s Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies turned to NOAA’s GOES 15 satellite.
The imagery from this spacecraft shows a smoke plume associated with this fatal fire, as conditions suitable for wildfire growth affected the area such as temperatures above 100 degrees, low relative humidity, and gusty winds. Additionally, Yarnell Hill has been affected by a long-term drought and warming trend.

The satellite animation shows the development of “pyrocumulus clouds,” which are billowy, tall clouds produced by large wildfires, and a telltale sign of a highly active wildfire.
