On Monday, ISRO launched India’s first navigation satellite. The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C22) took off at 11:41 p.m. from the Satish Dawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
Originally scheduled for June 12, a glitch in one of the electro-hydraulic control actuators in the second stage of PSLV C22 had forced ISRO to postpone the launch.
ISRO officials hope this launch helps India reduce its dependency on the United States’ GPS-based services. In addition, the officials are excited about the GSLV D5 mission to launch communication satellite GSAT 14 on August 6, from the second launch pad at Sriharikota.
