Garmin recently introduced Monterra, its new handheld, outdoor GPS device. Monterra is designed to survive in harsh environments and will be powered by Google’s Android mobile operating system, granting users the ability to download apps to enhance the device’s functional capability. The Monterra model is set to be released later this year.

Monterra works with Garmin’s BaseCamp software, which allows users to organize maps, waypoints, routes, and tracks. Users can combine two maps, such as TOPO, base map, or BirdsEye Satellite Imagery, into a 3-D amalgam using 3-D MapMerge.

In addition to its GPS capabilities, Monterra includes features such as an integrated three-axis compass with an accelerometer and gyro, a barometric altimeter, a UV sensor, Wi-Fi ability, ANT+, Bluetooth 3.0 and NFC capabilities, integrated FM radio, and a NOAA weather radio with SAME alerts. The model also has an 8MP digital camera with LED flash that captures 1080p HD video.
