[Satellite TODAY 05-29-13] MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates (MDA), a global communications and information company, announced it has signed a CA$10.8 million ($10.4 million) contract with Canada’s Department of National Defense (DND). Under the agreement, the company will provide five years of operational support for a space-based surveillance solution being developed by MDA, which will allow the DND to access timely and accurate surveillance information.
The contract includes three one-year options to extend the support, with a total anticipated value of the options at CA$6.3 million. MDA has been under contract since November 2011 to develop two transportable satellite ground stations that can receive and process imagery from multiple satellites in minutes, and are capable of being rapidly deployed to any area of interest around the world. The company expects to deliver the ground stations to the DND in late 2013.
Back in 2010, the Canadian government announced it would begin to modernize its intelligence-monitoring infrastructure. The approximately CA$880 million capital investment is part of the Government of Canada’s plan to modernize the Department of National Defense’s infrastructure.
“It furthermore reflects the government’s continued commitment to supporting job creation and economic growth, keeping Canadian streets, families and communities safe from crime and terrorism, and mapping out the road to economic recovery, growth and jobs for Canadian workers,” according to a statement on Communications Security Establishment Canada’s (CSE’s) website. CSE is Canada’s equivalent to the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).
