The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is calling for submissions to replace its 200-276 Mbps wireless technology, Common Data Link, currently used for military communications. The agency is looking for a proposal that would boost battlefield wireless to 100 Gbps.
The new platform needs to provide fiber-optic-equivalent capacity on a radio frequency carrier. This means it has to match the weight and power specifications of the current Common Data Link platforms and provide 200 Km reach for air-to-air links and 100 Km for air-to-ground links.
One of the main challenges is that the CDL’s replacer also needs to operate in all weather conditions, which would rule out free-space optics.
