[Satellite TODAY 12-11-12] MapBox, a provider of open source solutions for designing and publishing maps via the cloud, has selected DigitalGlobe as their commercial earth imagery provider, DigitalGlobe announced Dec. 11.

The new MapBox satellite service is designed to incorporate DigitalGlobe’s high-resolution satellite imagery as the maps’ base layer for added quality and ground detail. Integration of crowd-sourced information directly from OpenStreetMap (OSM) is also available to users for increased relevance and location intelligence.
The added functionality aims to empower MapBox’s growing customer base to create professional-grade maps with no previous experience and no specialized software required.
"The success of MapBox is indicative of the changing face of geospatial expertise in the age of cloud computing," DigitalGlobe Senior Vice President of Sales Bert Turner said in a statement. "Through the use of DigitalGlobe’s high-resolution imagery, MapBox is further enabling every online user to harness the power of mapping and location intelligence."
