 [Satellite TODAY 11-16-12] The first Sri Lankan communication satellite is scheduled to launch from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center on Nov. 22, operate by mid-2013 for commercial purposes and is partly owned by Sri Lanka’s first satellite company SupremeSAT, the company announced Nov. 16.

According to the SupremeSAT Chairman, the project is a joint venture with the Chinese companies China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC) and Sino Satellite Communications Company and also includes the building of a satellite Content Management Station and a Space Academy at Kandy. The estimated cost of the project is projected to be around $360 million.
China’s State-owned company CGWIC is assisting Supreme SAT with designing, manufacturing, and launching of the satellite. SupremeSAT also aims to launch a fully-owned satellite in December 2015 and its future Space Academy is designed to promote space science within Sri Lanka. The Space Academy aims to include a Satellite Ground Station to train scientists to handle communication satellite operations.
SupremeSAT has already begun to negotiate with the Maldives and Afghanistan to build them satellites, and with the launch of this current communications satellite, it will become the 27th private company in the world to own a satellite.
