[Satellite TODAY 02-15-12] Unclassified U.S. military space program and activity funding is set to decline 22 percent year-over-year to $8 billion under the U.S. Department of Defense’s 2013 spending request, the White House announced Feb. 13.

   The Pentagon said the spending cuts were driven by reduced procurement plans for satellites and launch vehicles, along with the termination of the U.S. Air Force’s Defense Weather Satellite System (DWSS) program in January.
   Though Congress recently allocated $125 million for a DWSS follow-on system, the Pentagon did not include a request for those funds in the 2013 budget. The budget also does not include funding for a second Space-Based Space Surveillance satellite, which many government satellite analysts expected.
