[Satellite TODAY 12-19-11] The Russian and Indian governments announced their intention to cooperate efforts in the development of satellite navigation equipment and the provision of services to civilian users of the Glonass system.
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said announced Dec. 16 that the sides expressed mutual interest in the use of Russia’s global satellite navigation system Glonass to expand space industry cooperation. The partnership also will include joint production efforts on satellite navigation equipment.
Glonass is Russia’s version of the U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS). The system is designed for both military and civilian uses. Both systems allow users to determine their positions to within a few meters.
