[Satellite TODAY 07-26-10] GPS 2F satellite manufacturer Boeing said a claim made by DLR, Germany’s national research center for aeronautics and space, that the U.S. Air Force GPS 2F satellite experienced “higher residual errors than expected" during testing, was out of context, since the satellite was reported to be working within the Air Force’s specifications.
Ken Torok, vice president of navigation and communication systems for Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems told Satellite TODAY, “There are no issues with the GPS 2F satellite. On-orbit checkout of the satellite, launched May 27, is progressing on schedule, and the satellite is operating in accordance with all technical specifications. The Air Force is also assisting members of the GPS user community, including Germany’s national research center, as they independently assess unspecified signal characteristics against their database of other GPS signals. The L1, L2 and L5 signals are meeting all performance requirements."
In the Air Force statement, DLR said that it combined L1, L2 and L5 signals in a technique used to characterize a number of known and modeled error sources from the signals during testing and that the SVN 62’s L1, L2 and L5 signals were operating nominally. Air Force officials also confirmed that the on-orbit checkout of its first GPS 2F satellite is progressing as scheduled as it approaches the halfway point of the 90-day checkout period.
DLR could not be reached for comment.

Correction – A July 23 version of this story that read, "Boeing Disputes DLR Claim," should have read "Boeing Responds to DLR Claim." The story also identified Boeing as a GPS 2F subcontractor when it should have been listed as a prime contractor.
