[Satellite TODAY 10-27-09] Lockheed Martin completed a preliminary design review for the U.S. Navy’s Communications at Speed and Depth (CSD) program, which uses Iridium satellite and UHF to provide communications to submarines from surface ships, aircraft and land-based assets, Lockheed Martin announced Oct. 26.
The CSD program’s mission is to provide real-time, two-way communications to submarines without having to surface to periscope depth.
In January, a Lockheed Martin-led team won a contract with the Navy to deliver three types of two-way communications buoys and associated submarine and shore equipment. Two of these solutions are tethered expendable Iridium and UHF communications buoy systems will be launched from submarines. The third is an acoustic-to-RF gateway system that can be launched from submarines and aircraft.
Lockheed Martin’s CSD solution moves into the critical design review phase, where detailed components and subsystems of the design are assessed to ensure the overall system will meet all Navy requirements.
