[Satellite TODAY 08-21-09] The Canadian Ministry of Industry awarded EMS Technologies a $7.9 million repayable investment to support EMS’ next-generation mobile satellite communications research and development project, EMS announced Aug. 20.
The investment is being made through Canada’s Strategic Aerospace and Defense Initiative, which aims to support industrial research and pre-competitive development projects in the aerospace, defense, space and security industries.
The investment will enable EMS to develop new products and applications for its satellite communications business, including transceivers, antennas and networking systems. EMS said the technology developed would augment current product lines and result in new products that will aim to benefit a variety of users, such as national security forces and commercial travelers.
"By supporting the development of advanced satellite communications technologies, the federal government is building on Canada’s strength in the aerospace and defense sector. This repayable investment will ensure that advanced [research and development] and highly skilled engineering and manufacturing jobs remain in Canada and help stimulate economic growth," Canadian Minister of Industry Tony Clement said in a statement.
