[Satellite Today 05-29-09] The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded Harris Corp. a 10-year contract with a potential value of $736 million to provide the ground segment for the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite Series-R (GOES-R) program, Harris announced May 28.
    Harris is contracted to design, develop, deploy and operate GOES-R’s ground segment, which will process satellite weather data to more than 10,000 direct users as well as provide command and control of current operational satellites. Harris also will provide the command and control of operational satellites.
    Harris GOES-R GS team members include: Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Boeing Mission Operations, Carr Astronautics, Honeywell Technology Solutions, Wyle Information Systems and Applied Research and Engineering Sciences.
    The first launch of a GOES-R series satellite is scheduled for 2015.
